ATTORNEY GENERAL and SOLICITOR GENERAL


ATTORNEY GENERAL


  • Appointed by the President of INDIA under Article 76(1) of INDIAn constitution
  • Holds the office during the pleasure of the President
  • He must be a person qualified to be appointed as a judge of Supreme court
  • Attorney general gives advice to the government of INDIA on legal matters
  • Assisted by a Solicitor general and 4 additional Solicitor Generals
  • References to the Attorney general are made by the Law ministry

SOLICITOR GENERAL

  • Sub-ordinate to the Attorney general
  • Appointed for a period of 3 years
  • Secondary Law officer of the Nation
